Europa 2018: Jersey Bridges & Causeways

JERSEY BRIDGES & CAUSEWAYS STAMPS MINT SET

Jersey Post will issue a set of four stamps on 9 March 2018 entitled Jersey Bridges & Causeways. ’Bridges’ is this year’s theme set by ‘PostEurop’, the trade association which represents the interests of European public postal operators.

Each year PostEurop members interpret and illustrate a set of stamps on a specified subject with the aim of building awareness of the common roots, culture and history of Europe. The Europa logo may be applied to stamps following that theme.

Melanie Gouzinis, Head of Philatelic at Jersey Post comments: “Given the fast moving and high-rising tides that can sometimes prove dangerous around Jersey, bridges and causeways play an important role in providing access to local lighthouses, fortifications and even the local salt water bathing pool.  Inland, ramblers can enjoy spectacular views from bridges and walkways constructed around reservoirs.”

Local photographer, Andy Le Gresley, was commissioned to provide images for the stamp issue.

The two stamps featuring the Europa logo depict the boardwalk at Havre des Pas which forms a bridge between the land and a salt-water bathing pool, and the bridge that divides the reservoir at Queen’s Valley. The causeways which to lead to both Corbiere Lighthouse and Elizabeth Castle are also depicted. They provide access to visitors at low tide but disappear rapidly as the sea level rises.

“EUROPA stamps are eagerly sought by collectors around the world,” continues Mrs Gouzinis. “With 49 countries participating in this initiative, they also provide an excellent opportunity to showcase our Island’s scenic beauty to a wider audience.”
