The
Rite of Spring is a ballet composed by Igor Stravinsky and originally choreographed by Nijinsky for Serge de Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes.
Its first performance at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in 1913 caused outrage due to its provocative choreography, the violence of the music and its strange costumes. Today, Stravinsky’s score is considered as one of the major works of the 20
th century and has inspired many choreographers such as Maurice Béjart and Pina Bausch.
