On the islet: stamp pays tribute to wild Åland archipelago nature

On 9 September, Åland Post once again issues a stamp with an Åland motif, freely created by an artist. “We are proud to present the second edition in our ‘Open Edition’ stamp series this year. Visual artist Carolina Sundelin’s stamp art On the islet captures the wild greenery of the Åland archipelago, inviting you to experience the fragrant colour splendour of summer”, says Johanna Finne, Marketing Design Manager at Åland Post Stamps. The On the islet issue is Carolina Sundelin’s tribute to the Åland archipelago and nature.
“I wished to create a harmonious composition with colours and shapes that reflect the beautiful Åland nature. For this edition, I was inspired by summer and my experiences of visiting an islet, wandering around, looking at flowers and plants. I chose chives as my starting point, which I think of as the lavender of the Nordics. In Åland, chives grow wild everywhere and are beautiful in their various forms, from bud to flower, even when wilted in late summer”, Carolina says.
Since 2002, Carolina Sundelin, who grew up in France and trained in art in the Netherlands, lives on Åland, attracted by the nature, light and colours of the island province. Her artistic work is characterized by her love of the Nordic nature. Plants and flowers are recurring motifs in her works.
