Horse riding and glacier walks are the subject of the new stamp issue in Iceland Post‘s now famous „Tourist stamps“ series, to be released on April 27th.
Horse-riding tours for all kinds of public are organized by horse rentals and horse-rearing farms across the country. The excursions span from a few hours up to several days, but the longer tours are intended for experienced riders. By traveling on horseback, people experience Iceland‘s beautiful nature and unique landscapes at its closest and in a very special way!
The Icelandic horse is renowned worldwide. On top of the typical gaits of walk, trot and gallop, the breed is noted for its ability to perform two additional gaits known as skeið and tölt. The Icelandic horse is so small some people could be tempted to call it “pony”, but beware! Don’t ever call an Icelandic horse “pony” to its face or to the face of its owner!

Roughly 11% of Iceland is covered by glaciers, and recent years have seen an increased interest in glacier tours. These guided tours are conducted in snow cars, on snowmobiles, jeeps or in organized walks.
In early June 2015, one of the largest man made ice tunnels in the world was opened in Langjökull. It is 550 m long, and visitors can now experience a glacier from the inside! Traveling on a glacier includes some risk, so good preparation and careful routing is an absolute must! Some companies offer cross-country skiing tours on the glacier, with travelers pulling sleds for a week, but if you’re short on time, you can go on a day tour or even try ice climbing! And don’t forget your ice axe and crampons!
